USB to RS422/485 Combination

Our standard ANC-6090 RS232-RS422/485 adapter can be used with a USB port adapter. The sole factory modification to the standard ANC-6090 consists of adding 2 female to female hex nuts to the RS232 side of the adapter to make it easy to fasten the Antona adapter to the USB adapter’s RS232 output. The ANC-6090 adapter draws power for operation from the USB adapter, but some applications would require external powering as detailed below. Additional 4-40 screws are included if the hex nuts on the RS422/485 DB9 connector have to be changed to attach to the cable or to the remote hardware.

Installation

Install the USB adapter first. Follow the USB driver installation instructions on the CD included with the USB adapter.

Power down the target RS422/485 device and attached any cabling needed to run from that device to the ANC-6090 adapter. Plug the ANC-6090 into the USB DB-9 male connector noting the labeling on the ANC-6090 (both connectors on the adapter are female). The ‘RS-232’ text is nearest to the RS232 DB-9 to be plugged into the USB DB-9 connector. That should complete the hardware installation, but there probably will be additional software to set up for getting the user’s application software to operate through the added USB serial port. The included CD will help in setting up the new serial port.

Power Supply

The adapter is normally powered from the serial port side DTR, RTS and TX input pins. If there is insufficient current to operate the adapter an external power source would be required. As long as the external source is DC, and capable of 150ma, you may use power sources between +3v and +12v to power the adapter. An internal +3.3v LDO voltage regulator handles the voltage conversion for unit operation. External DC voltage can be applied on the RS422/485 DB-9 connector using pin 9 for the +DC voltage, and pin 1 or 5 for the power supply ground as shown on the adapter schematic within the ANC-6090 User’s Manual.

USB – RS232 Operation

The USB adapter can be used as a standard PC serial comport on its own.

RS232 – RS422/485 Operation

This enclosed ANC-6090 adapter is the same as our standard ANC-6090 converter which can be plugged into a PC comport directly to convert RS232 to RS422 or RS485 differential signals for much improved noise immunity.

USB (or RS232) – CMOS/TTL Operation

As stated above, the enclosed ANC-6090 adapter is the same as our standard ANC-6090 converter so it can also be used for a USB (or RS232) – CMOS/TTL adapter by disconnecting the JP8 solder jumper and enabling the JP4 - 120 ohm terminating resister. See ftp://ftp.antona.com/pub/man6090c.pdf for more information on this mode of operation used for debugging prototype electronics.
